Watching the World Burn: Vicarious Grief & the Polycrisis

Hosted by Listening to Grief

Watching the World Burn: Vicarious Grief & the Polycrisis
A conversation about preventing the vicarious grief caused by seeing scenes of traumatic events, such as war, starvation, ICE raids, police brutality, and even climate events like icebergs melting.

Does it feel like images of war, famine, political violence, natural disasters, and senseless destruction are relentless? Do you feel it in your bones and deep in your soul? Do you just want a break from the onslaught of the news?

During the workshop, we will examine how we consume these images, and when it is intentional versus when it is fed to us without warning. Together, we will then co-create a list of resources and techniques that may help our nervous system return to a balanced state, preventing the vicarious grief from taking hold. This will be a supportive group where we can share what we feel about today’s polycrisis (a polycrisis is defined as the simultaneous occurrence of several catastrophic events).

By working together, participants will create community and a sense of belonging, while learning how to counteract the effects of traumatic images and videos.
