Let Me IntervYOU! 2025 Episode #1
Heritage. Legacy. How can we preserve culinary history? A cookbook! Enjoy conversation with Food Historian Joyce M. White re: her labor of love: Cooking Maryland's Way: Voices of a Diverse Cuisine

In 1963, the Hammond-Harwood House Association of Annapolis, Maryland, published Maryland’s Way, The Hammond-Harwood House Cook Book, which includes 700+ recipes sourced from centuries old manuscript recipe books and contributions from Marylanders.

In the new companion book, Cooking Maryland's Way: Voices of a Diverse Cuisine (2024), Food Historian Joyce M. White, supported by several contributing authors, reflects on the chief cultural influences of Maryland's early foundational cuisine: Native American, African American, German, and British.

Joyce's work as a food historian began in college in the late 1980s when she was a museum education intern at the Geneva Historical Society/Rose Hill Mansion in the Finger Lakes region of New York. Her first experience cooking historic food occurred there while performing the role of an 1840s kitchen maid at Rose Hill Mansion.

She earned an M.A. in American Studies from Penn State University, and has studied food history with leaders in the field at various historic sites in England and the U.S.

Welcome join us in conversation about this new book and how to preserve culinary history and honor family recipes.
