Fourteen new plays and poems chosen from a nationwide search explore the animals we love, the grief we feel when they die, and the bonds that remain. Premieres October 15 at The Marsh, San Francisco

Our Loving Companions is an immersive theatre production about the human-animal bond, the quiet and lasting connection between people and the animals who share their lives. Presented by Grief Dialogues, the show invites audiences to sit with the joy, loyalty, and loss that come with loving a companion animal.

The world premiere runs at The Marsh San Francisco from October 15 to 18, 2026, followed by The Marsh Berkeley from October 22 to 25. The evening brings together fourteen plays and poems selected through a nationwide competition, each exploring a different side of the bond between people and their animals.

The program includes a monologue by Allan Baker, "Saturday, Duboce Park," which finds the whole of a person's love for a dog in one ordinary morning. The production is directed by Pamela Hollings, with co-producer Alan Stewart, a veterinarian and playwright whose clinical work brings a grounded, honest view of animal care and farewell to the stage.

Whether you are grieving an animal, living alongside one now, or simply curious about what these companions give us, the evening is built to open conversation rather than sit in silence.
