Saturday Community Events & Workshops
Experience community-led workshops and forums around grief, healing, and growth. These will be hosted at some of Leimert Park's most significant venues and will be first come, first serve. Space is limited, so please arrive 15 minutes early! FREE

Between 12-6 PM, there will be six exciting community-led workshops at various venues across Leimert Park's main street, all featuring important and creative ways to explore loss, life, and love. There will be two workshops at each of the following times!

12:00 - 1:15 PT - NAVIGATING GRIEF & LOSS: THE BODY IS THE COMPASS

Event will be held at The Metaphor Club.

Hosted by yoga teacher Britt Blackwell known as “BLACK YOGINI,” this wellness and yoga workshop will be an offering to come back to our truest selves so we can fulfill what lives inside of our hearts.

12:00 - 4:00 PT - MEMORIALIZE LOST LOVED ONES WITH PAPER CRANE MAKING

Event will be held at Hot and Cool Cafe.

Explore the Japanese tradition of folding paper cranes as a way of honoring loved ones lost to COVID. With The Knowledge Shop, youth and adult team members will assist participants in making cranes that represent the loved ones they have lost to COVID.

1:00 - 2:15 PT - WORLD PREMIERE OF HONORING CHOICES | A GRIEF DIALOGUES FILM

Event will be held at Barbara Morrison Performing Arts Center.

Hosted by filmmaker Elizabeth Coplan, join a World Premiere of Film screening and conversation with the Honoring Choices filmmaker herself. This film explores what it means to honor choices and persuade families to consider planning now, when there’s still time.

1:00 - 4:00 PT | HEALING JUSTICE GATHERING–AN ALTAR, WELLNESS, AND BLACK LIVES MATTER LOS ANGELES ART EXPERIENCE

Event will be held at Center for Black Power, 3423 W 43rd Place.

Hosted by Black Lives Matter Los Angeles

We have to love and protect each other. Giving folks space to receive healing justice is equally important to the movement. Come and receive healing justice for your mind, body, and spirit so you can continue to fight in the struggle for our collective liberation.

2:00 - 3:30 PT | HOW TO TALK ABOUT ME WHEN I'M GONE

Event will be held at The World Stage Patio.

Hosted by S. Pearl Sharp, author, poet, filmmaker, and creativity coach, we will explore the key question: What actions do you want your family/friends to take (or not take) when you die? In this workshop, we will face this hard question, explore options, and create your personal, honest, and clearly expressed “Exit Plan” for a life exit that satisfies one’s soul.

3:00 - 4:30 PT | CREATING A FAMILY DYNAMIC FOR A LOVED ONE’S END OF LIFE CARE

Event will be held at Barbara Morrison Performing Arts Center.

This workshop is hosted by Dr. Seth E. Francois, who has over 40 years of management and leadership experience and will share his expertise on how to establish a care team, day-to-day care development, medication management, how to locate resources, modifying a home to accommodate care, financial management and planning, family dynamics, self-care, and support, keeping focused, and thinking ahead to support care.

4:00 - 5:00 PT | SUDDEN LOSS DUE TO GANG VIOLENCE: HOW A COMMUNITY HEALS

Event will be held at The World Stage.

After his ford born daughter–a peace activist and conflict resolution meditator– was murdered at 16 in a shooting, Donald Lacy founded the LoveLife Foundation to honor her life and legacy, with a core mission of offering anti-violence youth advocacy and training. In this workshop, Donald will share his experience of healing from devastating grief and how we can all move towards forgiveness and restorative justice.

7:00 - 8:30 PT | LOSS, LIFE & LOVE AFTER PARTY: AN ALL BLACK IMPROV AND COMEDY SHOW IN LEIMERT PARK

Event will be held at The World Stage.

Close out the Loss, Life & Love festival in Leimert Park with a special after party - an all Black improv show! Together, we’ll use improv and comedy to explore the hardest parts of life and experience how humor can help us heal.
