Death Doula World Training Day

Death Doula World Training Day
Showing up for someone at the end of life is one of the most important things we will ever be called to do. Knowing HOW to do that changes everything.

Death is a natural part of all of our lives, yet the knowledge of how to care for a loved one nearing the end of life has largely been lost across generations. The 7th annual Death Doula World Training Day seeks to change that by reviving these essential skills and making them accessible to people all over the world—for free.

This landmark event, hosted by the International Doulagivers Institute, will take place on April 24, 2025 as a free, 4-hour virtual interactive workshop designed to teach participants how to provide compassionate, holistic care for someone who is dying. Open to family caregivers, aspiring and practicing death doulas, hospice workers, chaplains, nurses, volunteers, and anyone eager to learn, the training aims to bridge the knowledge gap in end-of-life care, a critical need for both families and the healthcare system.

Why World Training Day Matters

  • Restoring Lost Skills: A century ago, end-of-life care was passed down through generations, but today, 98% of hands-on care falls to family members who are often untrained and unprepared.
  • Addressing a Broken Model: “It’s a model that is just not working,” says Suzanne B. O’Brien RN, the founder of the International Doulagivers Institute. Families urgently need practical training to provide meaningful, peaceful care during the end-of-life process.
  • Global Impact: Since 2019, over 23,000 people have participated in Death Doula World Training Day, transforming their understanding of death, healing their grief, inspiring about life, and empowering them to face this universal experience with peace and dignity.

What You’ll Learn

Participants will gain a framework for understanding the three distinct phases of the dying process—Shock, Stabilization, and Transition—a model created by O’Brien. Each phase is accompanied by specific interventions to support physical, emotional, and spiritual needs. The training includes:

  • Live Presentations from leaders in the field, like Ken Ross- president of The Elisabeth Kübler-Ross Foundation, Hospice Nurse Penny, Grief Dialogues, Dr. Qwynn Galloway-Salazar, The Modern Mortician, and more!
  • Group Exercises to connect attendees and solidify learning.
  • Q&A Opportunities to address lingering questions and foster deeper understanding.

The goal is simple yet profound—to empower families, friends, and caregivers to create a peaceful end-of-life experience, not just for the dying person but for their loved ones as well.
