I bring a unique background: Emergency Medicine physician, Maryland state legislator (1995-2019), Hopkins faculty, author. As a clinician, I want to know and respect my patient's wishes. For that to happen, completion of advance directives is a key step. I've seen families in conflict, and I've seen families appreciating a holistic experience when confronted with advanced illness. We are the first generation in human history that likely has some say about how, when, and where we die, and most of us would choose at home, with loved ones, pain free. That can happen if we have the discussion and complete the paperwork, something we too often avoid. My work has focused on breaking down the barriers to getting this done and has included writing two books which have earned endorsements from a diverse group of distinguished people, such as Maya Angelou, Sen. Ben Cardin, Tara Brach, and others.
