I have been a pioneer in the green funeral movement since the 1990’s, helping others reclaim more natural, healing ways to care for loved ones after death, rather than give that sacred task away to strangers in the funeral industry. I am a writer and storyteller, a home funeral/green burial guide and a licensed funeral director in the state of Washington. My book Reimagining Death: Stories and Practical Wisdom for Home Funerals and Green Burials was published by North Atlantic Books last year, winning a Nautilus Gold Award for 2019. The question: What does it mean to partner with nature when we die? lies at the heart of all I do. I know that bringing art, beauty and our own natural instincts to death’s threshold - in creative participatory ways – can ease shock and loss, transform fear and denial, and restore sacred communion with our bodies, with the earth and with Death itself.
