Patria Soli was started by a team of an artist and a health communication specialist who care about issues around the end of life. It is a socially engaged art project that delivers soil from one’s homeland to the person not able to go back to their homeland at the end of their life. We hope that this simple gesture will provide a conversation starter for necessary, otherwise difficult, communication between people and their family. In this diverse country, one’s ideas and beliefs around death vary greatly, and, therefore, respecting these has become more important than ever. There is more uncertainty and fear if people around you do not understand your views when you are dying. Our goal is to help people and medical professionals have open conversations about dying and death and understand that there are various ways of dealing with death in this world.
