display description

Suzanne B O’Brien, the founder of Doulagivers Institute, is a former hospice and oncology nurse with experience at over 1,000 bedsides caring for those at end of life. The Doulagivers Level 1 training is designed combining both her clinical knowledge and bedside experiences to provide education to those who are currently caregivers or may become caregivers for a friend or loved one in the future.

It has been shown that 98% of all hands-on care is performed by family caregivers with no formal training or prior experience. By providing education and resources about end of life, we’re not only allowing caregivers to be better prepared, we’re also helping them to feel knowledgeable and confident in caring for a friend or loved one. Everyone deserves to have a peaceful and comfortable end of life experience. By furthering The Good Death movement, the fear and stigma around death and dying is erased and replaced with confidence.

Our Inspiration

From the beginning of Doulagivers Institute, our mission has been expanding and enhancing quality end of life care for all people everywhere in the world and empowering family caregivers with the skills and knowledge they need to provide compassionate care to those they love in the final stages of life. Death is something that all of us will experience no matter our race, religion, or socioeconomic status. We believe that this education to support people to have the most positive end of life experience is a human right, not a privilege, which is why we also offer many FREE Resources for Family Caregivers navigating the end of life journey. We are currently facing an Elder Care Crisis in the United States and around the world - the mainstream healthcare system is struggling to handle the increased demand of this. Recently released Medicare data revealed that a Hospice worker is only in the home of a patient for 30 minutes per day on average… but the end of life is 24/7. As a result, family members of dying patients are being thrown into caregiver roles with no prior experience or adequate training. There has never been a greater need than right now for more support in this vital area of care, which is what gave birth to the Death Doula Movement.
